Poinciana is an unincorporated census designated place in Central Florida that spans both Osceola and Polk Counties. At 35 square miles it is reportedly the largest unincorporated area in the United States. The community has seen rapid growth and new development over the past decade. Poinciana saw a 500% increase in population from 13,000 residents in 2000 to nearly 70,000 in 2007. The planned commuter rail project called "Sun Rail", which incorporates Poinciana as its southernmost stop, will eventually connect Poinciana to Orlando and other major cities in Central Florida.
According to the Association of Poinciana Villages, the current population totals 68,000 resulting in a population density of just under 2,000 residents per square mile. The median household income in Poinciana is $37,000 while the per capita income is $13,000. The racial makeup of the area is 65% White, 18% African American and the rest made up of other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race represent 40% of the population in Poinciana.
Hospitals in Poinciana:
While there currently is not a hospital in Poinciana, a new 120-bed hospital has been approved for the region by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration which is the governing body that issues Certificates of Need for new hospitals in Florida. The new $115 million Poinciana Hospital is being developed by Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) which also owns the nearby 235-bed Osceola Regional Medical Center. The current economic climate has pushed out the timing of the project which was originally supposed to break ground in summer of 2010. HCA anticipates that the project will commence construction by spring of 2012 and be complete by 2014.
