The general practice physician is deals with the total healthcare needs of the entire family or individual and is trained to diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments. The family physician receives a wide range of training that includes preventative medicine, adult and elderly care, the care of children, women's health and maternity care. Acute care needs are referred out to specialists who have completed additional training or fellowships in specific areas of practice.
